81 North has an opening for a meticulous HTML/CSS developer focused on ensuring our web projects render perfectly across all major browsers and devices. Your core responsibility will be to test, identify, and fix cross-browser compatibility issues. This involves writing robust, fallback-ready CSS, debugging rendering inconsistencies, and maintaining a high standard of visual fidelity. You will be the go-to expert for ensuring a consistent user experience for everyone, regardless of their browser choice.
As a Cross-Browser Compatibility Specialist, your role is to be the guardian of our application's visual consistency. You will be responsible for a rigorous testing process across the latest versions of major browsers, including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge. This includes both desktop and mobile versions. You will use browser developer tools extensively to inspect the DOM, debug CSS rendering quirks, and analyze layout issues that differ from one browser to another.
Your core task will involve writing defensive and robust CSS. This means understanding which properties require vendor prefixes for older browser support and knowing how to provide graceful fallbacks for newer CSS features that are not universally supported. You will frequently consult resources like CanIUse.com to make informed decisions about feature implementation. When a visual bug is identified, you will be responsible for isolating the problematic code and implementing a clean, targeted fix that doesn't introduce regressions in other browsers.
Beyond fixing bugs, you will help establish best practices for the entire development team to follow, creating guidelines that promote writing compatible code from the start. This might include advocating for the use of specific CSS reset stylesheets, promoting certain layout techniques over others, and contributing to a shared knowledge base of common browser inconsistencies and their solutions. Your work ensures that every user has a high-quality experience, which is critical for our brand's reputation.
The employer recommends obtaining this certification to validate your skills and enhance your application.
Note: You can still apply for this position without the certification, but having it will make your profile stand out and may be required to move forward in the hiring process.
