81 North is looking for a Database Specialist to lead a critical data migration project. You will be responsible for designing and executing a strategy to migrate data from an older database system to a new PostgreSQL instance. This includes schema mapping, data transformation, and validation. This role requires meticulous planning and strong SQL skills to ensure data integrity and minimize downtime. This is a challenging project with a significant impact on our platform's scalability and performance.

This project is centered around a crucial infrastructure upgrade. We are modernizing our data layer by migrating from a legacy system to a modern, scalable PostgreSQL database. Your role is to own this migration process from start to finish.

Key Project Phases:

1. Analysis and Planning: You will analyze the source database schema and map it to a new, optimized schema in PostgreSQL. You will create a detailed migration plan, including timelines, rollback strategies, and validation checks.
2. Tooling and Scripting: You will write and test SQL scripts and potentially use ETL tools to extract, transform, and load the data. This will involve handling data type conversions, character encoding issues, and restructuring data to fit the new schema.
3. Execution: You will perform one or more dry runs of the migration in a staging environment to iron out any issues. You will then execute the final production migration, working with the engineering team to manage application downtime.
4. Validation: After the migration, you will be responsible for running comprehensive checks to ensure all data has been transferred accurately and that data integrity is maintained.

This role is ideal for a developer with a strong background in database management and data modeling. You must be extremely detail-oriented and comfortable with the high level of responsibility that comes with handling critical company data. • 2-3 years of experience working with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL.
