Morningstar is looking for a developer with strong SQL skills for a 4-month project focused on database performance. You will analyze existing database schemas, identify performance bottlenecks, and propose and implement optimizations such as indexing, query refactoring, and schema normalization. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys diving deep into data and improving system efficiency.

This is a specialized project within Morningstar's data infrastructure team. You will be tasked with analyzing and improving the performance and structure of several key databases that support our financial data products. Your work will have a direct impact on the speed and reliability of our services.

Key Project Activities:

• Performance Analysis: Use database performance monitoring tools and analyze query execution plans to identify slow queries and inefficient data access patterns.
• Indexing Strategy: Review existing table indexes, identify missing indexes that could improve query performance, and remove unused or redundant ones.
• Query Refactoring: Analyze and rewrite complex SQL queries to make them more efficient and performant. This includes optimizing joins, subqueries, and aggregations.
• Schema Review: Examine table structures and relationships. Propose and, where appropriate, implement schema changes (e.g., normalization, data type adjustments) to improve data integrity and efficiency.
• Documentation: Document your findings, the changes you implement, and the resulting performance improvements. Create best-practice guidelines for the development team.

This role requires a blend of analytical skills and hands-on SQL expertise. You should be comfortable reading and understanding complex schemas and have a passion for performance tuning. You will work alongside experienced database administrators and backend engineers who will provide context and support for your work.

• 2+ years of experience working with relational databases like PostgreSQL or SQL Server.
